Why Use the OED?

OED Oxford English Dictionary graphic

The OED Oxford English Dictionary is a stellar reference dictionary used by writers, readers, and researchers internationally. The print version of the OED encompasses more than 20 volumes on the Reference shelves, while our online version can be used by GRCC students and faculty from afar. The OED helps you:

  • Find meanings of words throughout history and see how language has changed
  • Search through quotations from a wide range of sources and time periods (including classic literature, specialist periodicals, film scripts, cookery books and more)
  • Use the Historical Thesaurus to track the changing language of the material world, the mind, and society, from the Anglo-Saxon period right until modern day
  • Look for definitions, spelling variations, pronunciation models, etymology, regional origins, usage information and more contextual information about how a word is used

Check out the OED’s Oxford Languages’ Words of an Unprecedented Year – a really interesting – and readable – report at how language evolved during 2020. Anyone can sign up for this FREE downloadable report.

Connect to GRCC’s OED from the Databases page with your last name and 7-digit Raider number.
