Cite as You Write

You’re about 1/2 way through the first summer session – and that means that you’ve probably completed a literature search and are starting to compose writing assignments. Don’t leave citing your sources until the end. Cite as you write – so you won’t have to hunt down an elusive resource you put into quotes – but forgot where you found it.

The Citing Sources Subject Guide is a good place to start. There are tabs for each of the major citation methods used at GRCC (APA 7th ed., Chicago 17th ed., MLA 8th ed.) , along with links out to easy-to-use guides like The Owl at Purdue.

Need more help? Librarians are glad to take a look at your citations and make suggestions. Send your citations to Ask-A-Librarian, along with a note about what citation method (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.) you are supposed to be following. How Do I Cite … Ask-a-Librarian

Remember, while database-generated citations are a great place to start, you *do* need to eyeball them to see that they match your assigned citation formatting style.

APA 7 – There’s a rule for that!

The American Psychological Association (APA) announced a revised version of their Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association in a 7th edition last Fall.  The APA announced that the new version would supersede the 6th edition during Spring 2020 semester, and most GRCC academic departments decided to make the move to the 7th edition this semester.

At GRCC, APA Style is typically used by: Business; Communication; Criminal Justice; Dental Assisting; Dental Hygiene; Exercise Science; Gerontology; Medical Assistant; Nursing; Occupational Therapy Assistant; Pharmacy Technician; Phlebotomy; Psychology; Radiologic Technology; Social Work; and, Sterile Processing.

New APA Format Debuts this Spring

At GRCC, the APA (American Psychological Association) Style for citations and paper formatting is typically used by most of the Social Sciences, Business,  Criminal Justice, and all the Health Professions departments.  In October 2019, the APA introduced the 7th edition of the APA Publication Manual, which replaces the 6th edition published in 2009. Changes will roll out into database-formatted citations in Spring 2020.  Use the 6th edition unless told differently by your instructor.  Most departments are waiting until after Winter semester to move to the new edition.  Click here OR here to find out more about upcoming changes.
