Some of the most popular streaming videos that GRCC’s Library licenses are those in Career Q&A: Professional Advice and Insight collection from Films on Demand. Candid video interviews with professionals across multiple industries cover topics including: keys to success in the field, education and certification requirements, general workplace atmosphere, a typical day on the job, industry-specific challenges, what the future holds, advice for breaking into the profession, and more.

Genealogy with Your Own LOM Library Card (updated)

Librarians are frequently asked about access to genealogical databases and local newspaper archives. GRCC collections serve the academic needs of students and faculty, so we don’t invest in those if they aren’t needed to support the curriculum. BUT – the Library of Michigan (LOM) does, and now you can get a free LOM library card!

Apply online by completing the form found here. Card information will be emailed to you. Use that LOM access to access their Family History e-resources, a selected list of which follows. 

Selected LOM Databases:

• African American Biographical Database Spans 1790-1950, covers the famous to the everyday person.
• Ancestry Library Edition Includes billions of records in census data, vital records, directories, photos, and more. (ProQuest no longer allows the LOM to have at-home access to this database, but the content is still available at the LOM, as well as many Michigan libraries.)
• Ann Arbor News Historical and Current Collection Access from 1923 – present.
• Black Life in America As recorded by the news media, from 1704 – present.
• Black Thought and Culture non-fiction writings by major American black leaders and public figures, including previously inaccessible material (letters, speeches, political leaflets, interviews, trial transcripts, etc.)

Get Alerts from Higher Ed Journals

While the bulk of our Library collection is focused on resources for student use, the Library licenses several higher education periodicals for the professional development of faculty and staff.

The [Faculty & Staff Resources Subject Guide] has a [Professional Reading] tab that includes a selective list of many of those full-text periodicals.

Staying up-to-date in higher education doesn’t have to be hard or take a lot of time. You can set up email alerts to notify you when new issues of specific periodical titles are available online.  To learn more about setting up this option, click into a chosen ejournal and look for [Share => Create an alert], [Create Journal Alert] or [Create Alert]. Contact your liaison librarian with any questions.

Alerts are also possible within most [Research Databases]. Craft a good search strategy and create an alert to email you links to full-text articles on that topic whenever new ones are added to the database
