Because of the water crisis, much attention has been focused on Flint, Michigan recently. But the city had a long and challenging history before this latest issue, which several recent books highlight. Demolition Means Progress : Flint, Michigan, and the Fate of the American Metropolis takes an urban history approach, looking at how government maneuverings and race shaped the city. In Teardown: Memoir of a Vanishing City (also available as an ebook), journalist Gordon Young returns home to Flint to investigate the people that have survived the many changes to the city.
